Briefly, the benefits of artificial turf over natural grass fields are that artificial turf fields give a consistent, high quality playing surface, a longer playing season that is not impacted by inclement weather (i.e. rain-outs) and improved technology and construction providing an acceptable alternative to natural turf fields. Artificial turf mimics the properties of real grass and is endorsed by sport governing bodies such as the Federation International Football Association.

The new generation of artificial turf, which uses an infill of sand and rubber granules that acts as a shock absorber, does not have the same risks associated with its predecessor "astro turf." Anecdotal evidence is said to have suggested that injuries may actually be lower on artificial turf than natural grass because of the consistency of the playing field. The polyethylene fibers used to make the grass are soft and do not create the rug burns "commonly associated with astro turf."

There are clearly some environmental benefits that are realized by installing artificial turf, such as reduced amounts of water, and the elimination of fertilizers and gas driven lawn mowers -- all of which are needed to maintain natural grass fields. In addition, the new generation of artificial turf uses rubber granules made from recycled tires mixed in with sand as an infill material underneath the synthetic turf. Tire disposal has become a major problem for landfills in the United States and efforts to recycle this material are encouraged. It should also be noted that the estimated life-cycle of artificial turf is 15 years so this material must eventually be disposed of.
We also recognize the advantages of "unlimited" playing hours, and the overuse issues of conventional turf. We all realize that youth sports leagues have been growing quickly in recent years, requiring more field time and putting more wear and tear on the grass. Soccer is especially hard on the grass. The fields are basically mud by some point in the season. The grass fields are closed from December to March, and many times given only a rest one day a week during playing seasons.

Local business and individuals may buy perminent advertising space at Alumni Field, including perminent advertisements on: Old Bleacher end caps; Old Bleacher back; New Bleacher front; Old/New Press Box front; Old Press Box back; Plaque for contributions; Walkway stones. Learn more about these advertising opportunites.
The project will include the resurfacing of the football field, the creation of a "blackbird walk" that will run from the parking lot to the field. The "blackbird" walk will be made of pavers. The bleachers will be updated so that they will be compliant with the federal mandates of the American Disability Act (ADA). In addition there will be lights placed on the field so night games will be able to be played. Learn more about how to give.
G. Housen has expressed interest in donating the new score board for the field. SUR Construction (see website) has offered to do all the site work for cost and donate the labor associated with the work. The Alumni Association has given permission to sell sponsorship advertisement on the new bleachers as a way to raise money.
Please give to this important community project. And we thank you.
